Company overview

What is known as the Ghana Co-operatives Council today began as the Gold Coast Co-operative Federation in 1951.  It was registered by the Department of Co-operation as number 632 as a non-trading, non-governmental organization.  Specifically it was formed to take over the function of co-operative education from the Department of Co-operation.

The name changed from Gold Coast Co-operative Federation in 1957 when Ghana attained independence to the “Alliance of Ghana Co-operatives”.  It ceased operation in 1961 when the then CPP Government took over orthodox co-operatives and the Alliance of Ghana Co-operatives ceased to operate.

The GCC being the supra apex body of the co-operatives movement in Ghana exist to champion and promote the cause of co-operatives with the view to making them economically viable and self-sustainable with the multiple effect of creation of employment and reducing poverty.

The Credit Unions concept is such that people with a common interest come together in a society, mobilize funds regularly so that after six months, when a needy member applies for a credit facility he/she would be offered with a minimum interest rate payable within a period of time. At a close of a financial year, management declares profit and shared among members contributions. The concept is good and appreciated and need to be promoted in workplaces, parish and communities.
